Bubrikh’s paper investigates the areal distribution and history of the systems of sibilant fricatives and affricates in Circum-Baltic languages (Balto-Finnic, Saami, Baltic, Slavic, Germanic). The manuscript (ca. 45,000 signs) was composed in Syktyvkar during WW2 and is preserved in Saransk. The present article explores this hitherto unknown work of the distinguished scholar and discusses it in the context of other theories of the origin of cokan’e.
