The functional approach to the teaching of Finnish as a foreign language and as a second native language has strong traditions, a base of principles and a variety of techniques. It especially emphasizes the communicative function of the language and the choice of "correct" assignments and texts. The approach proved to be the most effective in teaching of adults who had the status of Ingrian Finnish returnees.
