The article provides brief information about the initial stage of the formation of the oikonymy of South Karelia. The settlement of the territory by humans began several thousand years ago, but the most oldest known settlers of the region were the ancient Sami and the ancient Vepsians, who still lived here in the first half of the first millennium AD.
