D. V. Bubrikh – corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, honored scientist of the Karelo-Finn SSR is the founder of the Soviet Finno-Ugric studies, the founder of the Department of Finno-Ugric studies at Leningrad University. He played a major role in the study of Mordovian languages. He conducted several linguistic expeditions in the territory of the Mordovians. Based on the materials of the expeditions, he wrote several works in which he first solved the problems of Mordovian linguistics, for example: he classified the Erzya dialects, studied the history of the vowels of the first syllable of a word, and revealed the history of the development of the Erzya accent. The scientist participated in the development of Mordovian spelling issues.
